The bulk of injectors coming into NSP are either using tourniquets, or have got to the stage where they’re groin injecting because they say they ‘have no veins left’. But from my experience most people lack basic knowledge on how to correctly use a tourniquet. This article will cover how tourniquets should be used, and what makes a good tourniquet. This kind of information can give really effective fast results for injectors and help prevent the progression to higher risk sites like the groin. |

We've been talking a lot about sharing, so we decided to do a Hooked show on the subject.
We discussed reasons people share, the perceptions of sharing in trust relationships (eg husband and wife) and of course ways of minimising the risks of blood borne virus transmission if someone decides they are going to share. |

"Do you trust the people you use with?" It's a simple question really, but for a lot of people its a lot harder to answer that you'd think.I'm currently writing some overdose workshops for the project I work for and this question is going to be one of the areas of discussion, so I thought I'd write a bit about it here. |

Groin injecting is something every NSP worker and a large number of injectors have to deal with every week.
In this weeks Hooked podcast we discuss both the reasons people groin inject and its associated risks, if you work with groin injectors and don't already talk with them about their practices then this is a show you could really do with listening to. For the rest of you give it a listen anyway, it's a great show. |

While at the National Conference on Injecting Drug Use (NCIDU09) Allison Downing and Myself gave a presentation on the use of social media in drugs work. The session was very well received and enjoyable to do. But of course not everyone can attend the conference, and what use is a presentation about social media unless you can share it on the media in question. As a result I decided this weekend to re-record the presentation and put it on here. |

I've decided to restart the series of round-ups on injecting related news.
The Australian Department of Health and Ageing have released a report into the cost effectiveness of Needle Programme, the highlights have been summarised in this article from the Virtual Medical Centre and include the number of HIV and HepC infections prevented as well as the financial savings. Although in the UK we do now have the NICE guidance, it would be good to have a report more like the Australian one that goes into these greater levels of detail. |
