Hooked 32: Weird and unusual highs
It's a constant amazement the wide and varied ways we humans have of getting high. After the last few interviews on the Hooked podcasts we decided to give you a lighter episode. This includes everything from strange plants to Billy Ray Cyrus related highs. As Allison (the shows co-host and editor) said on Twitter when she was editing "A podcast on drugs really shouldn't be this funny"
If you're not someone who has listened to podcasts before, or if you have never even heard of them then we have an introductory article that explains all here.
Shownotes
I'd taken a few (well, quite a few) books to the recoding, the first one we used was 'Can reindeer fly: the science of christmas' I love this book and I've used it to solve arguments about reindeer getting people high for years (because I'm that kind of guy).
Allison mentioned Saw Palmetto, and then we went on to talk about more animals. This included getting high from bee and wasp stings, ant bites, and hallucinatory mullet poisoning (I've lost the original site I found it on, but a google search brings up lots of papers on it). I've also found another article called '6 animals that can get you high' which includes a section on getting high from DMT found in giraffe bones.
So the animals out of the way we went onto my own personal issue of chilli highs. Erowid has a great chili section and you might also like this chart of how some of the hotter sauces compare to things like pepper spray. One day I'm hoping to get to the same stage of chilli use as the character from War Inc.
We briefly talked about 5-meo-dmt.
On the plants we covered wild cucumber, catnip, lotus and nutmeg (during which we mentioned Shulgin's great book Phikal). And we finished up on mushrooms, I did say that everyone should have a good mushroom book (for the eating type of course), personally I have a few but the best one is this one from River Cottage.
