Hooked 25: Importance of rituals
For me understanding the use of drug using rituals is a key aspect of a workers job, but is something that unfortunately a lot of workers rarely discuss.
In this show we discussed some of the more common drug using rituals from heroin preparation through to Absinthe drinking rituals.
We really enjoyed recording this show which I think comes through in the recording especially for me in the section on absinthe which I've always felt parallels a lot of illicit drug preparation for its ritualistic aspects.
You can either download the episode directly or better still you can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes which will automatically get each new episode as it comes out.
If you're not someone who has listened to podcasts before, or if you have never even heard of them then we have an introductory article that explains all here.
Shownotes
I loved recording this show as I see the use of ritual behaviours as a key factor in drug use.
There are some useful links below but first I found this wonderful picture of a glass of absinthe with spoon and sugar, I think it might just become my computer wallpaper for a while.
OK enough of the pretty pictures I found two great articles on ritual in drug users for you to read. Drug use as ritual, Subculture rituals.
I know its going back to Absinthe (but the green fairy that the drink summons demands the return) but there is a fantastic book on the subject that includes a full history and details all the drinking rituals. The book is the Dedalus Book of Absinthe.
Let us know what you think about drug workers understanding of the rituals that people use and the need to understand them.
